Mixing with Bangkok's jazz musicians and local jazz fans is a great way to experience the city's nightlife.

Bangkok’s thriving music scene has many talented jazz musicians playing at clubs throughout the city. Although many hotels host jazz musicians, Bangkok has a vibrant selection of jazz clubs ranging from popular bars to smaller, quiet venues. Lively jazz ensembles and sets led by experienced singers as well as talented aspiring musicians eager to enter Bangkok’s jazz scene provide an enjoyable mix to Thailand’s burgeoning pool of music talent.

Bangkok’s Best Jazz Bars

The Saxophone Pub and Restaurant is a favorite venue for local Thai and foreign music fans. Saxophone hosts a variety of music acts every night from local jazz groups playing standards to acoustic guitarists, big band, and the blues along with T – Bone, the fathers of Thai Reggae, who play every Friday night. Although Saxophone is a cavernous, two story restaurant, the bands still feel accessible. The Thai food is good and cocktails are priced at around 180 Baht. The Saxophone Pub in Bangkok is one of the few bars where visitors can see foreigners and everyday Thais intermingling.

Brown Sugar Pub & Restaurant is an excellent jazz bar that showcases great local jazz musicians. In addition to jazz standards voiced by able singers, as the night moves on, rock and pop influenced music comes to the fore. With music every night and a mixed menu of Thai and Western food, the cozy Brown Sugar entertains a mainly expatriate and tourist crowd. Sitting along the sidewalk outside, or any of the seats inside provide ample opportunity to listen to the music. Many of Thailand’s jazz musicians have played or aspire to play at Brown Sugar or Saxophone, and a night out at either will be enjoyable for music fans.

Live jazz music in Bangkok, Thailand

The Jazz Happens Bar, located within walking distance of Khao San Road, is a small, delicate space located above the Barbali restaurant. Established by the music faculty of Thailand’s Silpakorn University, known for its art’s programs, Jazz Happens has few tables, providing the sense of a private concert. The young professional musicians and their friends encourage each other, trading the slick professionalism of most jazz clubs for a mellow warmth while giving delightful performances. The menu is minimal and the space tight, but for those seeking jazz in an intimate setting, the Jazz Happens Bar is a great venue.

Bangkok’s music scene is thriving. Tokyo Joes on Sukhumvit Road, Soi 24 remains a popular destination for local jazz music fans. The café at the Thailand Creative and Design Center located at the Emporium Shopping Center’s top floor hosts free jazz late on weekend afternoons. There are many venues to listen to jazz and blues in Bangkok. In addition to the live music offered by many of the upscale hotels, those venturing into Bangkok’s storied nightlife will uncover Thailand’s vibrant jazz scene.
